A woman aged 71-year-old has died after being struck by a car which was being chased by the police in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police have said a patrol car spotted a black BMW driving at speed on the M60 at 12.20am on Sunday 20th February.

Officers then followed the car attempting to bring it to a stop using emergency equipment on Stockport Road, the driver of the car then carried on towards Kingsway and Wilmslow Road.

At this point, the car has then collided with the 71-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man who was walking along the pavement.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police then arrested a man aged 34 in connection to the incident and an official investigation has been launched.

Police Sergeant Phil Shaw, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Tragically, a woman has lost her life as a result of this incident and our thoughts are very much with her family at this time.

“A full investigation has been launched and we are hopeful that there may be some witnesses who have dashcam footage that could assist with the investigation”.
