A Middlesbrough supporter has been arrested after leaving his 11-year-old son in a hotel room in Manchester so he could go out drinking to celebrate the team’s surprise FA Cup win.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police received a call for concern regarding the boy in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police took to twitter to share the incident “We have looked after the child with an unhappy mum on her way down from [the North East] to collect him,”
The police tweeted: “Boro away fan arrested for child neglect last night, after choosing to leave his 11yr child in the hotel after the game whilst he went into town celebrating their victory drinking.”
A spokeswoman for the force added: “In the early hours of Saturday 5 February 2022, police received a report of concern for the welfare of a child.
Over 9,509 Middlesbrough fans had travelled to Middlesbrough to watch their team in win in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw.
Inquiries established that an 11-year-old boy was asleep alone in a hotel room in Trafford.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect. He remains in police custody for questioning.
