Man with crossbow who was arrested over Windsor Castle security breach is detained under Mental Health Act

A man who was armed with a crossbow and was arrested after breaking into the grounds of Windsor Castle on Christmas Day has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The 19-year-old from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and with the possession of an offensive weapon.

The security breach happened at 8.30am while the Queen was in residence.

In a statement the Met Police said: “The man was taken into custody and has undergone a mental health assessment – he has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and remains in the care of medical professionals.

“Following a search of the man, a crossbow was recovered.

“Inquiries into the full circumstances of this incident are being progressed by Metropolitan Police specialist operations.”
