A large fire which happened about 7pm which are suspected to involve a number of gas cylinders has forced tran lines to be shut between Newcastle & Middlesbrough.

Cleveland police have confirmed that people living within Bilsdale Road have been evacuated following a fire at nearby allotments.

Police have urged people not to gather to watch the fire because the fire is causing lots of smoke and people within the wider area are urged to shut their windows.

Cleveland Fire have confirmed that 4 fire appliances are in attendance to an allotment fire within the Station Lane area of Seaton Carew in Hartlepool.

National Rail Enquiries said: “A fire next to the railway is causing disruption between Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

“As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or diverted. This is expected until 22:00.”

It said the affected routes included the Grand Central service between Sunderland and London Kings Cross.

The Northern Rail service between Newcastle / Carlisle and Middlesbrough was also affected by the fire.

In a statement on its website, Northern Rail said its services between Newcastle and Middlesbrough, and Middlesbrough via Hartlepool were cancelled.

It said that its staff were on-site and “are working to rectify the problem” but “disruption is expected until the end of the day”.

Cleveland Fire and Rescue is at the fire and fighting to contain it, Northern Rail confirmed.

The first affected services were the 7.15pm Nunthorpe to Carlisle service – which is being diverted via the East Coast Main Line – and the 5.54pm Carlisle to Middlesbrough service – which is being delayed at Hartlepool.
