Dorset: Two police officers have been left injured after breaking up a seafront fight

Two police officers have been left injured after breaking up a fight between young people on the seafront.

Police attended reports of a large number of people gathered who were in breach of the Covid-19 rules at Shore Road, Sandbanks in Dorset on Thursday night.

One of the officers was spat at and both officers sustained minor head injuries,

Police managed to arrest a 19-year-old man who was released and then taken to hospital with serious head and hand injuries.

Officers required Police Dogs and the support of a police helicopter during the incident in which glass bottles were thrown.

Dorset Police immediately issued a section 35 dispersal notice and manage to clear the area a number of hours later.

Assistant Chief Constable Sam de Reya from Dorset Police said: “Not only was this in breach of Covid-19 legislation, but there were also reports of criminal and public order offences, which unnecessarily drew on a significant amount of police resources.”

Police will now ensure a number of officers are within the area throughout the summer to prevent large groups of teenagers who are consuming alcohol in the area, racing vehicles, and starting fires.
