Covid is being used against police officers on Teesside which is why it is important for front line officers to be vaccinated.
Cleveland Police Federation Chair Glen Teeley revealed that some officers within the Cleveland Police area have been spat at within people who claim they have the virus.
The chair who has been a front line police officer for 20 years, said that covid is being used as a weapon against officers.
Although he does not believe officers should be viewed as a special group because it is about spotting the spread of the virus.
Saying “There are thousands of officers on the street visiting thousands of houses daily and it is what they are taking into those houses that is the problem.
“If you phone 999 we are the people who will walk through your door and you would want to know that they are safe”
Mr Teeley feels the government did not appear to have listened and wants officers to be vaccinated especially those who are responding to emergency calls daily, because those officers are the ones who are unable to work from home.
Lisa Oldroyd the unelected Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner has raised the matter of getting officers to be vaccinated as a priority to the policing minister Kit Malthouse.
Nadhim Zahawi who has been appointed the vaccines minister has already confirmed that police officers will likely be in phase two of the national roll-out programme.
Cleveland Police Chief Constable Richard Lewis urged the government to prioritise vaccinating frontline staff.
