Officers are urgently appealing for information after receiving a report of concerns for a child’s welfare – after they were seen getting into a car with a man in Middlesbrough.

Police received a report from a member of the public that at around 8.30am today (Saturday January 30) they saw a girl, thought to be nine or 10, getting into a car with a man.

The incident was said to have happened on Pelham Street, near to the junction with Clifton Street. The caller believed the incident was suspicious and reported it to police.

The man involved is described as white with a tanned complexion. He is further described as in his 40s, with dark hair with grey flecks in it. He is thought to be wearing a black t-shirt and was described as ‘average’ build and height.

The girl was described as white, also with a tanned complexion, brown shoulder-length hair and wearing a pink waist-length puffa jacket.

The vehicle involved is thought to be a small black car – possibly a Vauxhall Corsa, which was described as ‘new and clean’.

Detective Chief Inspector Pete Carr said: “This is a concerning report and our priority is ensuring the girl is safe and well. We have already carried out a number of enquiries and people in the area will have seen a police presence.

“We are appealing to anyone who saw what happened or has information to assist us to please contact us urgently. This includes anyone who recognises these descriptions and believes it involves them or a family member.”

Anyone with information should call 101, ref 15452.
