10 police officers have been hurt during the London Black Lives Matter demonstration.
Despite the Government and police advising people not to engage in mass gatherings a demonstration took place on Saturday 6th June in central London, for the Justice for George Floyd.
Met Police Officers engaged with those taking part, and on the whole the demonstration passed without event, and only a small number of arrests were made.
At around 19:00hrs this evening in Whitehall, whilst the vast majority of demonstrators had left central London, the mood of the remaining crowd changed.
They became angry and intent on violence, and began throwing missiles and flares at officers who were deployed outside Downing Street.
Officers in protective equipment were deployed, to identify and arrest those who had committed offences, and to clear the remainder from the area.
Ten officers have been injured as a result of today’s demonstration, including an officer from the Mounted Branch who was seen to fall from her horse. She is currently receiving hospital treatment, but her injuries are not life-threatening. The circumstances of what exactly happened will now be subject to investigation. The horse made its own way back to the nearby stables.
Superintendent Jo Edwards, spokesperson for policing today’s demonstration, said: “We understand peoples’ passion to come and let their voice be heard, they protested largely without incident.
“Our officers have been professional and very restrained but there was a smaller group intent on violence towards police officers.
“Twenty-three officers have received injuries, doing their job, policing protest over the last few days, and that is totally unacceptable.
“There have been 14 arrests made today, but we expect that number to rise and there will be a post -event investigation carried out.”
