Armed Police attended an incident on the Hartlepool Headland resulting in a police stand off that lasted into the early hours of the morning.

14 police vehicles responded to the incident and remained there for a number of hours.

A cordon was put in place to prevent a large crowd who had gathered to watch the incident getting close to the ongoing incident.

Cleveland Police have not yet released details of the nature of the incident.

Northgate road which is the main route into the Headland was closed to traffic

This aerial image shows police units at two locations one in the top right-hand corner and an area of the main incident.

A closer look at the image and you will notice there are a number of armed officers pointing guns towards a property where there appears to be a stand off.

With a further armed officer watching over the armed officers who are leading from the front.

It is believed the police cleared the incident at 2am.

The exact nature of the incident is currently unclear.
