Police have this evening tasered and arrested a man after four people were hurt in a stabbing in Manchester city centre.

Armed officers were deployed to Market Street before 6.20PM on Sunday to reports that two people have been stabbed.

Officers very quickly arrested a man on suspicion of serious assault.

The 30-year-old suspect was tasered during the arrest, which witnesses said happened outside a Primark store just across from Piccadilly Gardens.

Footage posted on social media showed officers among a large crowd on a Metrolink station platform outside the clothing shop, and numerous police vehicles parked nearby with their lights flashing.

Manchester Evening News reports that a police cordon stretches the entire length of the Market Street tram stop.

Four people have been injured in total, with one taken to hospital for treatment.

Greater Manchester Police said the violence was being treated as an isolated incident.

The force said it was not terror-related and there is not believed to be any wider threat to the general public.

But officers remain at the scene and public transport has been disrupted, with the Metrolink and bus services both affected.

Transport For Greater Manchester tweeted: “Due to a police incident on Market Street in the city centre, there is no through route between Piccadilly Gardens and Fountain Street/High Street. @MCRMetrolink services are affected.

“Please plan ahead if you are traveling in the city tonight.”
