How old do I have to be?

Before you apply to become a Police Constable you must be 18 years old, You can apply to become a Police Community Support Officer aged 16.

There is no age limit for Police Constables with the retirement age set at 60.

I wear glasses can I become a Police Constable? 

Yes, you can still become a Police Constable if you wear glasses. There are some requirements and you will be required to provide a report from your optician.

What must my unaided vision be?

You must be able to read the second line down on the optician’s chart which gives you a reading of 6/36.

What must my aided vision be?

With your glasses, your vision must be better than 6/12 in either eye or 6/6 in both eyes.

Can i be accepted if i have colour vision?

If you suffer from severe colour vision you won’t be accepted.

What level of education am i required to undertake before applying?

You are required to have obtained qualifications or experience before you can become a police officer. You are now required to hold a level 3 qualification within a certificate in the knowledge of policing or experience as a Police Constable or Police Community Support Officer for a period of two years.

Can i apply to become a police officer with a criminal conviction?

It all depends on of your conviction. If you committed the crime within 5 years you will not be able to apply. If you have a dishonesty or violence offence you will not be able to apply. However, individual circumstances may be considered depending on the nature of the offence.

I have a spent conviction or a conditional discharge do i need to declare this?

Yes we would strongly recommend you declare all convictions as all will appear when your security searches are completed and you will be asked why you did not declare these.

You must also declare any involvement in any criminal investigation that did not result in prosecution.

Do i need to declare my speeding offence?

Yes and any parking tickets. Your application with being rejected if you have more than 6 points on your driving licence.

Can i apply to become a Police Officer with a bad credit rating?

You will be credit checked when you apply to the police. Bad credit history may prevent your application from being successful.

This may also impact your application if you are applying to become a special constable or a member of police support staff.
