Two police officers have been attacked with a screwdriver as they caught a suspected burglar in London.

The suspect has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police were responding to reports of a burglary in Barnet, north London, when they saw a man acting suspiciously and carrying the tool.

The man then stabbed one of the officers in the head and another on the arm.

They were taken away by paramedics and are expected to recover.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: ‘Police were called at approximately 16:45hrs on Wednesday, 24 October to reports of a burglary.

‘Whilst en route, officers were approached by a member of the public who stated they had seen a man acting suspiciously and carrying a screwdriver on Lawrence Gardens, NW7.

‘Officers attempted to speak with this man.
