He was hauled before the courts charged with murder, his wife was found at the bottom of the stairs in an apparent Fall.

The Staircase surrounds the 2001 death of Kathleen Paterson who was found dead at the bottom of the stairs by her husband Micheal Peterson. 

Peterson claimed that his wife had fallen down the stairs and died of her injuries, but Police charged him with murder.

They accused him of bludgeoning Kathleen to death and attempted to cover it up by making it look like an accidental death.

the autopsy carried out on Kathleen found that she suffered a fracture of the thyroid neck cartilage and seven lacerations to the top and back of her head, consistent with blows from a light, yet rigid object.

The documentary details the couples life, from the courtroom, with details emerging such as her husband using male escorts, Something his wife Kathleen was apparently aware of.

it also revealed that Paterson was living in Germany with Elizabeth Ratliff, who was a close friend of his died after suffering similar injuries she was also found at the bottom of the stairs, Paterson was the last known person to see her alive.

Paterson would then go on to take over custody of Elizabeth’s daughter and raise them as his own.

The series looks at the build-up to the trial, the trial and the aftermath of the trail.
