A STUDENT who tragically died following an incident in Durham last night has been named.
Olivia Burt, 20, from Hampshire, died after suffering fatal head injuries outside of Missoula night club in Durham last night (February 7).
Police were called to the Walkergate area of the city at about 11.50pm following reports of a student on the floor outside of the night club.
When officers arrived, the student was being resuscitated by door staff before the ambulance service continued attempts to revive her. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir, from Durham Constabulary, said: “This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of Olivia during this incredibly sad time.
“A joint investigation is ongoing between ourselves and Durham County Council to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Police Hour understands that the woman became trapped under a barrier which had collapsed as students waited to get inside the nightclub just before midnight.
It is believed the student was in her first year of university suffered a head injury when she became trapped under a safety barrier.
Doormen at the venue acted very quickly and made desperate attempts to save her life, they performed resuscitation but sadly she died.
A large number of students were waiting to get inside the nightclub, they were not allowed in because the venue was already full.
The Northern Echo newspaper was told “I was stood in the queue to get into the club. “People were barging to get in. The queue has gone around the fence and as they pushed to get in it caused the fence to fall over.
“The girl was trapped under the fence and crushed. There was a fair bit of panic. One of the security men at the nightclub ran toward her and took his shirt off to stem the bleeding from her head.
They’ve released a statement confirming “CPR was in progress and we sent three resources, including our HART team, as well as on officer, and sadly the patient died at the scene.”
A post mortem examination carried out this afternoon confirmed that Olivia died as a result of head injuries.
