Man shot and wounded after attacking a police officer with a hammer at Notre Dame

Police in Paris have shot and injured a man who attempted to attack an officer with a hammer outside Notre Dame Cathedral.

The incident is being treated as a potential terror attack and members of the public have been warned to stay away from the Cathedral, on the Ile de la Cite island on the River Seine.

One officer was injured during the assault in the cathedral’s courtyard before the attacker was shot by Police colleagues.

Police confirmed the man was shot and injured, but not killed, in the shooting.
