boy aged 12 sadly dies playing football with mates

A 12-year-old boy has sadly died after collapsing while he was playing football with his friends.

The boy was with his friends at St John’s School and Sixth Form College, in Bishop Auckland where he was a Year 8 pupil.

His friends and nearby dog walkers attempted to resuscitate him on Wednesday at around 7.30pm. He was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

A statement on the school’s website from headteacher Lisa Byron said: “Sadly we have to inform you that a Year 8 student here at St John’s, died suddenly last night.

“We ask that you remember his family, his friends and our community in your thoughts and prayers during this sad time.

“Please be reassured that we are supporting our young people and all those who knew James during this difficult time.”

It is thought the boy played football for local team Bishop Auckland St Mary’s Junior FC.
