A man who has 62 points on his licence is among thousands of motorists still allowed to drive despite having exceeded the limit that warrants a driving ban.

The man who is from West Yorkshire is one of 10,000 who are able to regularly drive on the UKs roads despite having more than 12 points on their licence.

A further 203 people are still on the roads having amounted more than 18 points it has been revealed by the BBC following a Freedom of Information requests

As the law sits at the moment drivers who have up 12 penalty points must attend court and face a six-month ban.

However, the legal loophole is that Magistrates have the power to opt against the ban if the offender can prove that losing their licence will cause “exceptional hardship”.
