15 vehicles are involved in a pile up on the A19 Northbound just after Peterlee.

Emergency services are on scene.

Durham Police Road Policing unit have tweeted an image from the scene of the incident.

Heavy wind and snow have battered the North East’s roads this morning resulting in most major routs being covered.

Police are urging drivers to drive to the roads conditions.

Durham Police initially confirmed a serious incident on the A19 which has closed northbound carriageway due to a four car crash. This is now believed to involve 15 cars.

Long delays are expected.

Durham Police have confirmed they are dealing with a number of reported RTCs due to the snow fall.

Officers are also on scene of a 1 vehicle RTC on the A1M Bowburn between J61 and J62.
