Durham Police has confirmed that Kazakhstan teenager was tragically killed on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M)

The incident happened near Bowburn Services in the early hours of Saturday 19th November 2016.

Askar ABILPANOV, a 19-year-old male from Kazakhstan, was a pedestrian on the motorway where he was struck by a Heavy Goods Vehicle.

The incident took place at around 1.55am and Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw a red coloured HGV or a pedestrian in the motorway of the northbound carriageway at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and witnesses are requested to call Durham Police on 101 quoting reference number DHM-19112016-0030 if they have any information
