A man has died after he and his father were attacked by a gang who were attempting to steal a moped from outside their house.

A murder inquiry has been launched, led by detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command. Officers are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.

At around 01:25hrs on Tuesday, 13 September, a family were woken by a noise outside their house in Gibbfield Close, Chadwell Heath.

Two of the family – a 27-year-old man and his 46-year-old father – rushed outside and saw a group of up to four men attempting to steal a moped.

Both men sustained stab injuries. They were taken to an east London hospital, where the 27-year-old man was pronounced dead in the early hours of Wednesday, 14 September.

Officers know the identity of the deceased, but await formal identification. A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

The 46-year-old man remains in hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

The group of men ran away from the scene, without the moped. There has been no arrest at this stage.

A murder investigation has been launched by detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything that may assist the investigation.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police via 101. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or visit crimestoppers-uk.org
