A female police officer has been violently attacked by a 15-year-old school girl in Cumbria.

Members of the public had to intervene to stop the attack as a girl kicked and punched the helpless police officer laid on the floor.

Five teenagers were arrested including a 15-year-old girl who has been described as “aggressive and drunken”.

Cumbria Police said the incident happened on while the lone officer was on patrol in Main Street area of Windermere at 9.50pm on Friday night.

The police officer was approached by a 15-year-old boy who told the police officer he had been attacked by another youth nearby. She was then surrounded by a large group of teenagers and violently assaulted.

The police officer is now recovering at home but is unfit for work at this time.
