A woman aged 78 has been airlifted to hospital after her arm was ripped off in what police are calling a ‘freak car accident’.

The woman was reaching into her car to close an electric window when the car suddenly lurched forward and trapped the woman at 4pm in Hayle, Cornwall on Saturday afternoon.

She was airlifted to Derriford Hospital where surgeons are now hoping they can re-attach the womans arm which was severed at the elbow.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said: “What appears to have happened is that she has lent into the car to close the electric windows.

“She has turned on the ignition to get the power to turn the electric windows to close but unfortunately the car was in gear and the car has lurched forward trapping her hand/arm.

“In the process of doing that it has taken her arm off”.
