Man with axe aggressively approached police officers in Newcastle following hour stand off

A man has been arrested after an incident in Newcastle following an armed stand off with Northumbria Police Fire Arms Unit.

Police responded to an incident at 6.50pm on April 4th on Welbeck Road area of Newcastle to reports of a man in distress.

Police Officers attended and located a man on a roundabout who had an axe at his feet.

He indicated to officers that he had a weapon concealed.

Police closed the road temporarily to allow police to deal with the incident and a cordon was put in place.

Officers approached the man at around 8.35pm the 29-year-old man approached officers in an aggresive manner and he was subsequently tasered.
The man was then arrested for outstanding matters and taken into police custody.
The road is now fully re-opened and the  police cordon has been taken down.

Police have said there was no risk to members of the public and anyone affected by the incident is thanked for their patience.
