PC David Phillips this distressing news will be greeted with great sadness – Andy Burnham

Andy Burnham MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, responding to the death of PC David Phillips, said:

“This distressing news will be greeted with great sadness in Merseyside and across the country.

“PC David Phillips bravely placed himself in harm’s way to protect the public and the country will forever owe a debt of gratitude to him.

“Our thoughts today are with his wife, children and all his colleagues at Merseyside Police.

“This tragic event is the latest in a series where police officers have been seriously injured or, worse, lost their lives.

“While the immediate focus must be on catching David’s killers, I would urge the Home Secretary to consider whether any more can be done – including strengthening the law – to give police officers the protection they need.

“We owe all those who go to work and place themselves at risk on our behalf nothing less.”
