Former Police Constable Stephen Merryweather has been named after tragically falling to his death onto the A19 on Sunday. 

The Sixty-four-year old was a retired police officer who lived in Yarm. 

Officers responsed to reports a male had fallen from a bridge at 9.40am on Sunday Morning. 

Tragically the former officer fell in to the path of a petrol tanker.

A statement from Cleveland Police said: “Stephen’s family does not wish to say anything further at this time and they ask that they be left in peace to come to terms with their sad loss.

“Our thoughts remain with Stephen’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
