Police are appealing for information after two armed robberies in Gateshead this morning.
At around 7.10am this morning (July29) officers received reports that a man had entered the Co-operative supermarket in the Allerdene estate.
He threatened the shop worker and demanded they handed over the contents of the till. They refused and he fled the scene in a red coloured vehicle.
At around 7.20am officers were then called to reports of a second armed robbery at the One Stop store on York Road in Birtley.
It was reported that a man had also entered the premises, threatened staff and demanded money and made off with a small quantity of cash.
A short time later a red vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident was found burnt out in Wallace Gardensin Gateshead.
Detective Inspector Michelle Robsonsaid: “We believe these two robberies are linked and that the sameoffender is responsible for both incidents.
“We will also be investigating whether there is any link between these incidents and two robberies in the same area on Sunday. We will always keep an open mind in these type of investigations.
“I want to reassure members of the public that extra patrols will be carried out in the area to make you feel safe and carry out enquiries into the incidents.
“Anyone who has any information about these robberies is urged to contact us on 101. Any information, no matter how small, could help us track down the person responsible.”
The offender is described as white witha tanned complexion, around 5ft9in tall, aged in his early 20s and of chubbybuild. He was wearing a scarf across his face, gloves, a dark hooded topand trousers.
