The Home Secretary is set to announce new laws that mean police officers will not be responsible for the mentally ill.

New laws will outline plans to stop those suffering mental illness to be held in a police cell under the mental health legislation.
Theresa May will look to free up officers from the role of looking after those with mental health issues.

Instead more beds in hospitals will be provided.

For years officers have been forced to detain people suffering mental health conditions because there has been no hospital beds.
