Richard Gatiss, who attacked partially sighted Alan Barnes outside his home in Gateshead, has been jailed for 4 years.

The 67 year old who has suffered from height and growth problems since birth, was attacked as he moved his wheelie bin outside his Gateshead bungalow in January, leaving him with a broken collar bone.

Gatiss, 25, is believed to have fled the scene empty handed after searching Mr Barnes pockets for cash to fund his drug habit

A local beautician Katie Cutler set up an online fundraising site to help Mr Barnes after learning about the attack, in which he revealed that he was too afraid to return to his home. Donations from all over the UK reached £330,000 in a few weeks to help Mr Barnes to buy a new house where he feels safer.
