16 year old guilty of murder after stabbing man to death during burglary

A 16-year-old boy has today, Tuesday, 10 February, been found guilty of breaking into a south-west London home and stabbing the owner to death.

Usher Ricardo Sawyers (15.6.98) of Carlton Drive, SW15 was just 15 when he viciously attacked Martin Thomas, 39.

He was today convicted of murder and robbery.

Odel Munroe-Sobers, 20 (19.03.94) of Sudbury House, Wandsworth High Street, was found guilty of manslaughter and robbery.

A 14-year-old boy from the Wandsworth area – 13 at the time of the incident – was also found guilty of manslaughter and robbery.

The court heard how local residents spotted three males entering the victim’s address in Huntingfield Road, Roehampton, at 20:00hrs on Wednesday, 22 April 2014.

Within minutes the three were seen fleeing from the scene.

Sawyers had entered the property first before stabbing Mr Thomas five times, puncturing his lungs.

The others waited outside until given a signal to enter and steal property.

Police were called and on arrival discovered Mr Thomas slumped in his kitchen.

Officers recovered a hat from the scene and, following checks, arrested Sawyers. Further enquiries led to the identification and arrest of the other defendants and all were subsequently charged.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Andrew Rees, of the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “Martin Thomas was the victim of a terrifying and vicious attack in his own home. Whilst he knew one of his attackers, such incidents in the home are still incredibly rare and isolated.

“I am very grateful to the local community who helped us to piece together the tragic events leading to Mr Thomas’s death. I hope today’s verdict goes some way to bringing some solace to his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

The three are due to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday, 13 March.
