Police have arrested a woman following the death of a three week old baby in Oldham.

Police were called to Lychgate Court, Oldham at 5.20am on Friday August 15th by North West Ambulance Service.

Police were informed that a baby who is just three weeks old was unresponsive.

The baby was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital but sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

A 55-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing a death to a child by overlaying.

She remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Dave Moores, said: “This is an absolutely tragic case in which a baby who is barely three weeks old has died.

“Any death of a baby is always extremely upsetting and keenly felt by family members and even the wider community.

“An investigation is underway and we are committed to identifying how and why this baby died.

“We also have officers supporting family members at what is clearly a very distressing time for them.”
