Northumbria Police have located the body of a man shortly after he escaped police custody.

He has been arrested following a fight in the car park of the Marsden Grotto Pub, he was arrested and placed in to the back of a police van, during which officers were in the processes of arresting another male when he escaped.

Police discovered his body at the bottom of Marsden Grotto cliffs in South Shields a short time later after launching a local area search involving the police helicopter.

Northumbria Police said the man’s body was discovered at the bottom of Marsden Grotto cliffs in South Shields just after 1am.

The independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.
