Police officers based at the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone have arrested a 20 year old man in what is believed to be a UK first.

The man was stopped in his car at 7.40am on Tuesday 24 June during a routine stop check. He was apprehended at the outbound tourist controls as he was attempting to board the train for Calais in France.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class C drug after officers found approximately 500 kilos of khat, or catha edulis, in pillow cases in the boot and back seat of his black VW.

Officers have seized the khat, believed to be worth at least £15,000, for analysis.

The arrest is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK because khat was officially made a class C drug at midnight on 24 June.
