Russian students remain in police custody following Newcastle Uni incident

Police received a report of concern from Newcastle University at around 10am on Tuesday, June 10.

Two Russian students remain in police custody following concerns from Newcastle University at 10am on Tuesday June 10th.

Police closed the INTO building while they carried out searches and a forensic examination of the area.

Police arrested a 18-year-old man yesterday and have today arrested a second 18-year-old man as part of the ongoing enquiries.

Police have confirmed their is no cause for concerns for students and the wider community.

When asked by Police Hour what the items to cause concern relate to? Northumbria Police confirmed they are unable able to comment at this time.

A large part of Newcastle City centre and University campus was sealed off for the majority of yesterday following the discovery of potential suspicious items.

Police are in the area around Newcastle University to continue to provide reassurance to the community.
