North East Counter Terrorism unit takes over Newcastle Uni incident investigation

The North East Counter Terrorism Unit have this evening told Police Hour they have assumed responsibility for the investigation of an incident which occurred at Newcastle University Campus on Haymarket Lane.

It has been confirmed that evacuations were carried out across the campus as a precautionary measure on Tuesday June 10 and Thursday June 12, 2014.

during the evacuations specialist teams removed suspicious material from within a student accommodation within the University Campus.

Once these were removed students returned back to their accommodation.

Due to the seriousness of the potential offences the North East Counter Terrorism Unit have now taken the lead on this.

They have moved quick to reassure students and the wider community there is no immediate risk in connection with the alleged offences under investigation.

Two 18 year old men have been arrested and remain in custody at this time. The first 18 year old was arrested in London on Tuesday June 10 on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act. The second 18 year old was arrested in Northumbria on Wednesday June 11 on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. Officers have been granted extensions to give them more time to question the men.

We recognise that people may have concerns as a result of this activity and would like to reassure them that precautions were taken at the earliest opportunity to ensure public safety while enquiries were undertaken.

We would ask people not to be alarmed and we are grateful for the patience and understanding of people locally.
