Police have launched a murder investigation after body found within commercial premises in Washington.

Police attended waste management premises on Wilden Road, at just after 1pm, on Tuesday, June 24, following reports of a possible dead body.

Police attended the scene, along with the ambulance service, where the body was located and death confirmed.

The body is yet to be formally identified, however, is believed to be 26-year-old John Sumner of Lincoln Street, Sunderland.

A post mortem examination is currently being carried out establish the cause of death. At this time the death is being treated as suspicious.

Officers are in the area carrying out enquiries and providing reassurance to the public.

Detective Superintendent Roger Ford, of Northumbria Police Major Crime Team, said: “An investigation has begun into the circumstances of John Sumner’s death, which at this time is being treated as suspicious, and we are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“We’re keen to build a picture of John’s movements over the past few days and would urge anyone who has knows him, or who has any information, to contact us on 101.”

Anyone who believes they have any information to assist the investigation should contact police on 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 531 24/06/14.
