The police officer at the heart of the ‘plebgate’ row has announced he is seeking damaged of upto £200,000.

The officer named PC Toby Rowland has said he is suing Mr Mitchell for the suggestion he was not telling the truth following the dispute that erupted at the gates of Downing Street in 2012.

Mitchell was accused of swearing at police officers and calling them ‘plebs’ after they requested Mitchell use a side gate rather than the main gate.

At the time the Conservative MP denied all allegations and resigned as chief whip.

Lawyers for PC Rowland have now filed documents which claim on the grounds that his reputation has been damaged by Mr Mitchell’s remarks and he suffered “great distress, humiliation and upset”.
