Heavy snow has hit parts of Cumbria making driving conditions extremely difficult to pass due to snow and ice.

Police are concerned about driving conditions on the A66 as road conditions are difficult.

A speed restriction is now in place and Cumbria Police are advising people only to travel if necessary.

They are asking drivers to drive to the conditions of the road and with great care and attention.

Drivers are asked to avoid the following roads as they are currently closed, or the snow has created potentially dangerous road conditions:

· A5092 – Both ways are blocked. There is queuing traffic between A5084 (Penny Bridge) and A590 (Greenodd)
· A686 – Hartside Pass will be closed
· A686 – Alston (two vehicle road traffic collision, no injuries believed at this time)

Police are urging communities to be prepared, only drive if essential and look out for vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours. Pavements can be just as dangerous as roads if they haven’t been gritted or cleared so take care when walking as well as when driving.
