John Darwin has been arrested at Newcastle International Airport Police have confirmed.

Darwin aged 63 faked his own death by paddling out to sea in a canoe in his native Hartlepool in 2002.

He was found out when he handed himself into a police station in 2007 claiming amnesia and was sentenced to six years for fraud in 2008.

After having been convicted in 2008 he was released in 2011 and was unable to leave the United Kingdom without permission.

Darwin then travelled to the town of Sumy in Ukraine to meet a woman.

Darwin was arrested as he landed at Newcastle Airport.
