Just before 4.40pm this afternoon, a fatal collision took place on Haverton Hill Road, Billingham, close to the entrance to Johnson Matthey.

Involved were a white Mitsubishi L200 pick up type van, a white Vauxhall Vivaro van and a pedal bike.

Fire and ambulance service colleagues attended the incident and roads in the immediate area were closed. Haverton Hill Road was closed from Portrack roundabout up to the junction of New Road and it remains closed while investigations take place.

The cyclist, who is in his 50s, suffered serious injuries and was unfortunately pronounced deceased at the scene. Specially trained officers are supporting his family.

The male driver of the Mitsubishi, who is in his 40s, was taken to James Cook University Hospital and he is in a stable condition. The male driver of the Vauxhall was uninjured.

Insp Lee Rukin of the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit appealed for any witnesses to the collision to contact police as a matter of urgency:

“We know this industrial area would have been busy at the time with people coming to and leaving work.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision to get in touch with Cleveland Police on the non emergency number 101, quoting Event 203736.”
