Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a 78-year-old man was hit over the head with his own walking stick.
The elderly man had been with friends in the White Rose Public House in Middlesbrough commemorating fallen soldiers on 11th November being an ex-soldier himself.
He left the pub at approximately 10.45pm and began to walk the short distance to his home address along Egmont Road, passing the junction of Lothian Road.. He is unsteady on his feet and walks with the aid of a walking stick.
He was approached by two males, one took his walking stick from him causing him to fall to the ground, the males then searched his pockets and stole his mobile phone. One of the males demanded money and threatened him, stating that he had a knife.
Before making off one of the males hit the victim across the face with his walking stick, causing abrasions and bruising. The suspects made off taking the his phone and walking stick with them. The man had to shuffle along the ground to a neighbouring house to seek help and there received treatment from ambulance staff.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspiciious aroud the time of the offence are asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101.
Two men aged 22 and 17 have been arrested for Robbery and Possession of an offensive weapon and appeared at TMC today. Both were remmanded in custody.
