Police have named two young people who died on the A19 at the weekend when their motorbike collided with a lorry

The crash between the Iveco articulated lorry and the Yamaha off road motorbike happened at around 2.50am on the northbound carriageway of the A19 just south of Hawthorn services, on Saturday.

The motorbike rider and pillion passenger were confirmed dead at the scene and have yet to be formally identified but are believed to be 21-year-old Alexander James Mackenzie from Newlands Road, in Seaham, and 21-year-old Angela Bate, from Wycliffe Road in Seaham. A formal identification is expected to take place later this week.
